The area is rich in history and archaeological finds, bearing witness to continuous habitation since prehistoric times. Archaeological interest here reaches its peak, from the Minoan settlement at Katsounakia awaiting excavation, to the Peak Sanctuary on the hill of Trachilas and the ancient pumice stone quarry at Psili Ammos.
At Kavaloi, the small islets opposite Xerokambos, the fishing installations dating back to the Proto-Minoan period reveal the secrets of the ancient city and the Hellenistic salt pans near the beach, which contributed to the production of sea salt. In the same area, you will find nesting sites of Eleonora's falcon (Falco eleonorae).
